By Ana Thomson

Unlike in the past, people with tattoos now no longer have to worry about removing them when they want to. Tattoo removal is a great option for those who want to get rid of their colorful body designs.

You may have changed your mind about having a tattoo because of a new job, new relationship or new life. But whatever the reason, you can always go for an option that will work best for you and can accommodate your budget and needs.

One example is the laser tattoo removal technique which utilizes a laser in penetrating the ink and breaking it down. It usually necessitates eight to ten sessions for an average-sized tattoo, but those with more colours and bigger size may require more. There is no intolerable pain associated with this option. Likewise, intense pulse light (IPL) can be used also. The principle behind it is just like laser removal, although IPL uses a more intense light when burning the ink.

One of the best things about utilizing laser in removing a tattoo is that it results in minimized skin scarring, or sometimes none at all, on the affected and surrounding areas. With this procedure, the doctor applies and controls intense laser beams to penetrate only the area of the skin which has the tattoo. The laser beams break up the ink without having to yield scar or scrape off the skin layer.

With laser tattoo removal method, the surgeon or dermatologist is cautious in determining the right width of the laser beam as well as the light's wavelength (color). The wavelengths used differ depending on the tattoo ink color that has to be destroyed.

Other people also try the method dermabrasion, which is considerably more painful compared to laser and intense pulsed light procedures. With dermabrasion, a process called "sanding" is done to scrape off the skin layer that contains the tattoo and to let the skin heal and grow again. This is not the most recommended method because it is known to cause skin scarring.

Removing a tattoo may require money, time and effort. But if the result is something that will satisfy you in the long run, then it is more than worth it. With today's many available treatments for removing tattoos, you can surely find an option that fits your needs.
